      I find companies today working diligently on ensuring their respective senior succession plans are completed and bullet-proof. Those same companies are now working just as diligently on ensuring their respective talent acquisition strategies at the entry point of the organization are just as solid. One is not more important than the other. But what is often inadvertently excluded? Perhaps, the “middle”.

    Those great new hires at the entry point will quickly gain momentum and desire more – soon to be stars. In addition, those succession plans are playing out close to what you anticipated. What about that “middle”? Companies that do not have a purposeful retention and development plan for current managers and directors, may find themselves in a talent vacuum ten years from now.

    Start now with your talent who resides a couple organizational layers below your successors, but yet a couple of levels above your star entry point. Start with building a library of their aspirations. That, coupled with their ability, will be the starting point for focused and purposeful development plans for the “middle”.

      HR executives and their staff will be on the leading edge of two of the two most powerful forces in every workplace: the retirement of the Baby Boomers and the emergence of Millennials and post-Millennials. One door is closing while the other is opening.

    These two groups make up the majority of any typical workforce, and the group which leads it now will disappear as they pass the mantle. It will affect everything: succession planning, recruitment, reward structure, employee relations… everything.

    From what I have seen, the Millennials, and hopefully to be joined by the post-Millennials, will do a better job of creating great places to work, and a fairer world.
